Carolina on My Mind

Sunflowers | Stony point, North Carolina

This is a difficult kind of post to make interesting, alive, and fun to hear. I don’t think I’m the only person that dreads death.

I believe it is a doomed proposition.

It just seems like a hard assignment. But, here I am, for reasons I put into the post.

One thing I can say is, I liked my Mamaw Mary Summers. She was a faithful steward of the Earth, and the mother of a faithful son, Allen, and a faithful daughter, Rhonda, who told her the secrets of her life. I’m in North Carolina to visit her, and I’m thinking of her life.

“God kept me busy outside. I walked to feed the chickens. I pulled a couple weeds up. That’s all I could do this summer, and grow them maters. I ate a couple mater sandwiches. I got to where I couldn’t chew them. Sonny said he was coming by, but that was a lie. I got dizzy this morning. I haven’t decided what I’m giving to the church.”

“That’s a personal decision. It’s like a beehive of activity around here. I’m going to make some popcorn and a problem list on that cork board so everyone who visits will know. The first problem is your hair. We have to wash and brush your hair. I can’t believe you still have some red hair at 94. I don’t know why you ran hospice off, you should call them back. You don’t have to be afraid they are going to euthanize you like your twin sister, Martha. Can I drag your hospital bed out onto the front porch in the fresh air and sunshine? I’m going to clean your windows so you can see out. I’m not happy with the results, so I’m not going to charge you.

Are you in pain?”

\\ Stacy

“Just that knot in my stomach.

Will it get better? “

\\ Summers

“You lived a good long life, mamaw. Cancer will get you and make it hard no matter what you do. Cancer will take you out with a bang.”

\\ Stacy
